Investments

Funny how a lot of photographers out there use the term "investments" when it comes to how much it will cost to shoot your portraits... isn't an investment supposed to get us some sort of financial return at some point in the future?  When did a having your picture taken turn into a way for you to make money?

The truth is, hiring a photographer is not an investment.  For example, 20 years from now, you will not be getting any money back and your wedding day will be nothing but a memory.  You will think back on the day and remember all the good times you had, the joy you felt, the pride, and maybe, just maybe, you'll even remember your father shedding a tear as he danced with you in that perfect wedding dress.  No, these memories will not get you back any financial returns because they are not an investment... they are priceless!!!

Photographers often call the fees you pay them an investment because the pictures you get from them are the only things, from your big day, that last.  Of all the vendors that you pay on your wedding day, a good photographer is the best place to spend your money.  The dinner will be eaten in a matter of minutes, the band will pack up their instruments and the dancing will be done by the end of the night, your memories might fade over time, but the moments captured in the photographs will last for the rest of your life.

I may be biased in saying this; but, if you're going to spend money on your wedding (or on your family portraits, your baby's first birthday, etc...) make sure you get a photographer and get one you like.  You don't want to look at your pictures and have feelings of resentment because you hired your 'Uncle Fred' because he bought a new fancy camera but didn't know how to use it.  Get yourself a trained and experienced photographer so that you'll simply look back on your pictures and portraits and say that was the best day of my life.

My Fall Favourites!

Hey everyone!  I'm still getting used to using my new website and blog... so, as we head into the new year (and I finish tidying up my computer's desktop), I thought it would be a nice time to reflect on some of the work I did last fall.  So, here are some of my favourites from some of the sessions I shot last fall.  I love all the great colours and all the smiling happy faces.

I hope you enjoy these pics as much as I enjoyed taking them!  :)

My New Website!

It's been a year in the making... but I'm finally done.  I'm proud to present to you my new website!!! (Applause) Isn't technology awesome!?!?

In honour of this momentous occasion, I would like to offer the first two people to contact me and book me as their photographer, through my shiny new website, a 50% off sale. I'm going to give the first person to book me as their family photographer AND the first person to book me as their wedding photographer each a 50% reduction in price.

That's right... one family session and one wedding package are being offered at half off... but act now as this offer is only valid for the month of January.  Let's consider it a happy new year celebration!!!

That's my cover page (on the right) in case you missed it. Feel free to click on it. ;)

Big People

Any one that wants to be a family photographer should also be able to take portraits of adults too... as cute at the kids are, moms and dads are obviously a vital part of the family photo!

To that end... a year ago I enrolled myself at Sheridan College and have been taking night school courses to better my photography.  Currently, I'm taking the Intro to Wedding course... thus the pretend Engagement and pretend Wedding photos I posted earlier... but I've also taken a Portraiture class too!  Here's some of the work we've done...

Not only are these guys fabulous looking models, they are also enrolled in the night school program too.  We all get to learn about different styles of lighting; rembrandt and loop to name a few, as well as rules like the Rule of thirds and the Inverse Square law!!!  :)  (The Inverse Square Law is an inside joke as it has been a pain the butt for our less mathematically inclined people... but it technically describes how light falls off as the distance between your subject and light source increases).

Some people have come and some have gone... but these guys have been there with me since the very beginning and I couldn't imagine going through the program with anyone else.  Thanks everyone!!!  :)

Little People

Again, the reason my wife allowed me to buy all the fancy photography gear is due to how pretty it made our babies look!  Here's my second born when she turned one.

How cute is she?!?!  Yes, I know that's a rhetorical question... she's the cutest little girl in the whole wide world!  I can say that because my first born is now the cutest big girl in the whole wide world... so I'm not playing favourites.  All this practice taking pictures and portraits of my family has helped me to become the family photographer I am today.  I love weddings, but I love family portraits even more.

But... I have a confession to make... People under 1 year old aren't really people.  WHAT?!?!  That's right... they are just a sack of potatoes!  ;)  They don't do much, can't move around, can barely hold themselves up in a seated position.  Makes them very difficult to photograph.  And they even look like little aliens!!!  Don't get me wrong, there are people out there that can do wondrous things with newborn photography... I'm just not one of them.  And I've loved my little darlings since the moment they were born...  I just think they got much cuter around the time they were one year old.  Like a fine wine, they get better with time.  (I say that now because I don't have teenagers yet... we'll have to wait and see what that stage of life brings)

Anyway, I will end this post with some more shots of little people I found cute and was lucky enough to take their pictures when they turned one.  :)
